Artist Self-criticism & Self-doubt

Have you ever doubted your ability as an artist? Have you spent time criticizing yourself over your art process, your creativity, or your finished work? Perhaps getting involved with an artist group or art challenge could be the ticket.

Reading the comments section of a recent art challenge once again raised my awareness of how intrusive those thoughts are and how much it can cost you physically, emotionally, and financially. We can talk ourselves into not working on our craft. And that just won't do.

You have to see your self-criticism or self-doubt for what it really is -- fear, insecurity, or a limited vision of what is possible for you or any artist. If you practice noticing and observing yourself and your thoughts, then take productive action towards stamping it out, the problems can be transformed into something inspiring or beautiful.

I have found that I do my best work when I am emotional - angry, sad, manic, or self-doubting. When I face my fear and say to myself "this is possible", I can do the opposite of the negative approach or action - a.k.a. giving up.

I have been participating in the Unison Colour 5-Day Pastel Challenge with Associate Artist Lynn Howarth. It has been very revealing to learn so much within such a short time about these concepts of self-doubt and self-criticism. There are lots of comments and posts of concerned, worried and stressed participating artists. Part of my goal during the challenge is to encourage these artists and let them know they are not alone in this process. It has been a very supportive environment and I am very appreciative of it and the teacher, Lynn Howarth.

I would definitely encourage others to participate in these types of art challenges. It really boosts your confidence, no matter your previous experience or medium. I am definitely encouraged to do the art when I start by looking at the art others are doing. It inspires me to do more art and give up or procrastinate less.
